AMD
The creator of Ryzen processors and GPUs, is facing obstacles in releasing open-source drivers for its graphics cards on Linux. The problem lies with the HDMI Forum, the organization overseeing the HDMI standard, which is preventing AMD from making its FOSS (Free and Open Source Software) drivers for HDMI 2.1 publicly available.
For Linux users running AMD GPUs, connecting high-definition, high-refresh-rate displays over HDMI 2.1 has been a persistent challenge. Reports and bug reports, like one about a 4K display at 120Hz or another discussing a 5K display at 240Hz, highlight the ongoing issues.
Despite AMD having already developed the necessary drivers through its GPU Open initiative, the HDMI 2.1 support remains unavailable on Linux. According to AMD developer Alex Deucher, the HDMI Forum currently does not permit an open-source implementation of HDMI 2.1.
The HDMI standard, crucial for connecting monitors, is a complex specification. Its latest version, HDMI 2.1, was published in 2017 and involves intricate details. Notably, major players in the entertainment industry, such as Fox, Universal, Warner Bros, and Disney, are part of the HDMI Forum, emphasizing the standard’s importance.
HDMI cables are not just ports; they include copyright protection measures like High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP). Upgrades like HDMI 2.1b in August 2023 mean newer cables might be necessary, reflecting advancements in display technology.
As the demand for high-quality video increases, HDMI cables must handle more significant bandwidth. Furthermore, advancements in display technology make it crucial to adapt to newer cable versions for optimal performance.
The complexity of HDMI 2.1, combined with restrictions from the HDMI Forum, hinders AMD’s efforts to release open-source drivers for Linux users. As of now, there is no resolution to this issue, and we have reached out to both the HDMI Forum and AMD for further insights. We will provide updates if they respond.
